About our Founder & Lead Mahout
My name is Panupong Wongchomphu (Mr. Okay)
With over 12 years of experience in the elephant industry, Panupong Wongchomphu, fondly known by customers as Mr. Okay, has dedicated his life to the care and conservation of these majestic creatures. Starting his journey in 2012 as a trekking tour guide, Panupong quickly became aware of the harsh realities faced by elephants in the tourism industry, particularly in activities like elephant riding, rafting, and cart riding.
Witnessing the cruelty inflicted on these gentle giants deeply troubled him, prompting him to seek a path that aligned more closely with his values. In pursuit of a more ethical approach, Panupong joined a newly established conservation camp, where he spent four years caring for over 20 elephants and educating visitors about the deep bond between mahouts and their elephants. His passion for conservation led him to another camp focused even more on the well-being of elephants.
However, the global COVID-19 pandemic forced the camp to close, leaving Panupong and his team to find new ways to continue their mission. In 2022, Panupong returned to his calling, this time with a renewed vision. Partnering with an acquaintance who owns elephants, he now strives to create a unique and enriching experience for visitors that prioritizes the elephants' welfare above all else.
Over the course of his career, Panupong has cared for more than 100 elephants, and his deep commitment to their well-being is at the heart of everything he does.
His goal is to not only run an ethical elephant camp but also to offer customers an experience that is both meaningful and transformative, all while preserving the natural life and dignity of the elephants in his care.
About our 2 members of our Elephant family
Khamkaew and Boonngern
We are thrilled to introduce two new members of our elephant family at the
Peaceful Happiness Elephant Camp:
Khamkaew and Boonngern, each with their unique stories and resilient spirits. Khamkaew, a 27-year-old elephant originally from Kanchanaburi Province, has faced challenges from birth. Born with a physical abnormality—her left leg shorter than her right—Khamkaew's gait has always been distinct.
For years, she worked as a riding elephant in Kanchanaburi, but her condition made the work difficult and taxing. After receiving much-needed care and rest from her previous owner, Khamkaew has now joined us, where she will continue her rehabilitation in a nurturing environment tailored to her needs.
Joining Khamkaew is Boonngern, a lively 7-year-old who previously performed with a traveling show troupe across Thailand. His early life was filled with constant movement and performance, but now Boonngern is ready for a more peaceful existence. At our camp, he will have the opportunity to grow and thrive in a setting that allows him to live as nature intended.
Both Khamkaew and Boonngern will now experience a life of tranquility and care, where they can truly be themselves and flourish under our dedicated guardianship.
